Split Pea & Sweet Potato Soup

1 cup yellow split peas1 medium sweet potato, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch slices7 green cardamom pods 2 cups vegetable broth2 cups water1 medium onion, chopped1 tsp garam marsala1 tsp ground cumin1 tbsp butterpinch of cayene pepperlemon juicesalt & pepper to taste
Add broth, cardamom and peas to a stock pot and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer and cook for 15 minutes. Add sweet potato and cook until tender. In a saute pan melt butter and cook onions until tender and translucent. Add cumin and garam marsala and cook until onion starts to carmelize. Set aside.
Remove cardamom pods and puree 1/2 of pea mixture until smooth, adding small amounts of water if needed. Return to pot and add spiced onion mixture. Add cayene pepper, salt and lemon juice to taste. Bring to simmer. Serve with chopped cilantro and very thin lemon slices.
