African Yam and Peanut Soup

1 T vegetable oil1/2 c onion1 clove garlic1 1/2 tsp fresh ginger root, minced1 tsp ground cumin1 tsp ground coriander1/2 tsp ground cinnamon1/8 tsp ground cloves1 1/2 c fresh tomatoes, diced1 1/4 pound yams, peeled & chopped1/2 c chopped carrot1 1/2 c chopped celery1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed & chopped3 cups chicken or vegetable broth1/2 tsp salt1/2 c creamy peanut butterdash of cayenne pepper1 T brown sugar (optional)
Heat oil in a large saucepan. Saute onion until browned, about 5 minutes. Mix in the garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, cinnamon and cloves. Stir in the tomatoes, yams, carrot, celery and jalapeno and continue to cook, stirring, for about 5 minutes. Add broth and salt. Bring to a boil and reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat. Puree soup in a food processor or blender until smooth. Return to saucepan and stir in peanut butter, cook until heated through. Mix in cayenne pepper and brown sugar, is desired. Makes approximately 5 cups.
