Introduction

Easy-to-make soft pretzels. Easy-to-make soft pretzels.
Number of Servings: 12

Ingredients

    1 pkg active dry yeast
    1 1/3 cups warm water
    1 tblsp sugar
    1/2 tsp salt
    3 1/2 cups flour
    1 egg
    coarse salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease 2 large baking sheets. Sprinkle yeast over warm water in large bowl, stir with rubber spatula until dissolved. Stir in sugar and salt until dissolved. Gradually stir in flour with wooden spoon until stiff dough forms. Turn dough onto well-floured board. Knead until smooth, about 5-7 minutes. Divide dough into 12 equal pieces. If time permits, allow dough to rise about 5 to 10 minutes.

Roll each dough piece into 15 inch long rope. Shape each rope into a pretzel. Place on baking sheets. Beat together egg in small bowl; brush on pretzels. Sprinkle pretzels with coarse salt to taste. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or cold. Makes 12.

    Incredible!
I rolled mine about 18" long and liked the shape better. A real winner. We loved them. With sausages, sauerkraut, and spicy brown mustard, it feels like a real Oktoberfest! - 4/7/12

    Very Good
Have been looking for ways to up my fiber and calcium so made this with whole wheat flour and sesame seeds. yum - but be careful with the salt. my kosher salt looked beautiful but really made the taste too salty and I ended up scraping it off. - 2/1/11

These pretzels were pretty good. They definitely need a topping of some sort, though. - 5/17/10

Good Recipe! I used Sea Salt instead of Kosher. The hard part was rolling the dough long enough, my first batch came out fat (too short). The pretzel it self tasted a little bland next time I will try it with cinnimon and sugar and use whole Wheat flour. - 1/20/10

These were very good. We ate them with mustard. I used whole wheat flour, so they were slightly dense. I will make these again! - 4/4/09
