Substituting ground turkey, skim milk, egg whites only, whole wheat flour, part-skim mozzarella, and prego heart smart traditional sauce, and omit the salt brought calories down to 380.3, fat 14.5g, sodium 570mg, and carb to 26.9, while bringing the dietary fiber up to 4.8g. - 3/9/09

For the folks talking about how "unhealthy" this is....... 6 servings from a 13 x 9 x 2 dish are really good sized portions. I think it would easily serve 8 people...add a salad and you are not busting the calorie budget. Justa thought :)
I think this sounds great and will try it soon!

I think just by changing the sauce used and your choice in the protein and veggies this could be universal. I tried it with enchalada sauce and shedded chicken breast...changed the cheese to cheddar, changed the choice of veggies and it will make your tongue slap your grandma down!!! - 3/8/09

For those of you who say it's not healhty...really easy recipe to make healthier...try 96% ground beef, skim milk, reduced fat cheese or a little less cheese. Would probably taste just as good but with less calories. Try some variations. Nice idea though - 3/3/09

I made this for the first time and my family really liked it. Instead of flour, I used Trader Joe's Multigrain Baking & Pancake Mix (same cal, .5 more g of fat & .5 more g of fiber), which we love to use for pancakes. I used half of the cheese and added garlic and veggies which added great flavor. - 3/4/09

i would like to know what kind of sauce--pizza or spaghetti--would like to try this recipe but don't want to mess it up! - 3/2/09

you can honestly use any....a low calorie or whatever......it won't mess it up. You can get the calories down by replacing the things for healthier stuff. The recipe ingredients were just what I could find on here because I am new at this. So go for it, make it and make it healthier!

I thought of this as a whole meal, not a snack or something. So the calories seem reasonable since one serving and a fresh salad are really satisfying! I'll make it again - 10/6/09

Great dish, great flavor. Didn't taste like pizza much but who cares :-) Used ground turkey, skim milk, 1/2 the salt, and no-salt added sauce with lots of spices. Will try with wheat flour next time and more veggies. Will definitely make again. - 3/28/09

this was great. i tried it last night with the whole family and they all loved it. had to have extra cheese for hubby, and since everyone is so picky on veggies we left it out (but we did have a side of veggies). my s.i.l. took 2 bites and asked for more. - 3/2/09

I forgot to add the cheese so I cooked it for 20 minutes and then topped it with the cheese and stuck it back in for 5 miutes it was still good, will make this again - 3/12/09

I thought this did make very nice serving sizes and looked when done like a traditional shepherds pie. I bought large jar spagettie sauce so I can make it again. I did add italian spice to cut veggies/ cheese but still a bit bland. Still kid and family friendly meal. Thanks - 3/12/09

This recipe made 14 servings. I made the following substitutions: cheddar cheese, skim milk, whole wheat flour, ground turkey, tomato sauce, and I added mixed salad greens, garlic and onion powder. This was DELICIOUS!!!! I will make this again, probably at least once a week! :) - 2/15/11

My family loved it. I made a few changes, but boy it brought back memories. I use to make it back in middle school but we would unroll premade cresant(sp) rolls for a crust.
I love yours without the back stuff. My daughter is planning on our veggie one.

Loads of Kcal and fat to fix this I:
I used a low fat mozzeralla (which would omit 1 gram of fat per serve
premium mince and only 20 oz (which halves the fat content of the whole dish)
In essence it is about 16gms less fat and that = 144 less calories per serve!!
