    0.5 cup dried chickpeas
    0.5 cup yellow split peas
    0.5 small brown onion
    1 clove garlic
    0.5 tbsp oil
    1 cm piece fresh ginger, grated
    1 tsp ground coriander
    1 tsp ground cumin
    0.25 tsp ground tumeric
    0.25 tsp garam masala
    0.5 tsp ground chili
    1 medium tomato, chopped
    1,5 cups water


Cover chickpeas and split peas with cold water and soak overnight. Rinse and drain.

Cook onion, garlic and ginger in oil until soft. Stir in ground coriander and cumin, tumeric, garam masala and chilli. Cook, stirring, until fragrant.

Add peas, tomato and water. Simmer, covered for about 1 hour or until dahl is tender (or around 15-20 minutes in a pressure cooker). Remove from heat and stir in fresh coriander.
