    1 cup dried chickpeas soaked in water for atleast 4-5 hrs and cooked in 6 cups water and salt till they are soft and can be mashed with hands (say 45 min) or pressure cook them.drain and reserve liquid.
    or 1 can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans
    1tbsp cooking oil
    2 medium onions finely chopped
    2 medium tomatoes finely chopped
    1tsp garlic paste
    1 tsp ginger paste
    2tsp cumin powder
    2tsp corriander powder
    1/2 tsp turmeric powder
    1/2 tsp red chilli powder
    2 tsp garam masala or chole masala
    (you can find this in indian grocery store.)


1. heat oil in a pan
2. add onion, ginger, garlic and saute till onions are translucent. on medium heat.
3. add cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilli, garam masala and roast for 2 min.
4. add tomatoes and saute for 5 minutes on medium heat.
5. add the cooked chickpeas. adjust salt to taste and also add 2-3cups reserved liquid or water and bring to a boil on high and then lower the heat to low and simmer for 30 min.
6. garnish with cilantro. serve with roti,or rice or bread
