    3 c. sugar
    4 eggs
    1 c. shortening
    3 c. flour
    1 t. soda
    1 t. cinnamon
    1/2 t. each salt, cloves, nutmeg
    1 t. vanilla
    4 green apples finely chopped
    1/4 c. warm water
    2 c. milk
    2 egg yolks
    3 T. flour
    1 c. nuts


Cream 2 c. sugar and shortening in bowl. Beat in eggs. Sift flour, baking soda, salt, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon together. Add to creamed mixture, beating until smooth. Blend in vanilla. Combine apples with water, fold into batter, mixing well. Pour into 3 wax paper lined cake panes. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Combine milk, 1 c. sugar, egg yolks and 3 T. flour in saucepan. Boil until thick, stirring constantly. Stir in nuts. Spread between layers of cake.
