    6 ounces beer
    1 tablespoon molasses
    dash dried thyme
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1 bay leaf
    dash ground white pepper
    4 short ribs or 2 whole ribs

    1 teaspoon vegetable oil
    1 tablespoon dried minced/chopped onion
    1 6-ounce can tomato paste
    2 tablespoons molasses
    3 tablespoons bourbon
    dash ground white pepper
    dash dried thyme


For marinade and ribs:
Combine all ingredients except ribs in heavy medium saucepan. Bring to boil. Cool marinade completely. Place ribs in large heavy-duty resealable plastic bag; add marinade. Seal bag; turn to coat ribs. Refrigerate overnight, turning bag occasionally.

For sauce:
Heat oil in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté until golden brown. Remove from heat. Add tomato paste, molasses, and bourbon; stir to blend. Bring sauce to simmer. Stir in white pepper. Simmer 10 minutes to blend flavors. Stir in thyme. (Sauce can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)

Oven cook ribs at 250°F for 2.5 hours. Barbecue for approx. 10 more min.

Serves 2 (1 rib or 2 half-ribs each).
