This is a really simple, really good recipe. It's especially good when the weather starts getting cold. My bf also enjoyed it very much. I made 1.5x the recipe and added 1/2 tsp curry powder, cooked it on low for 8 hours. My split peas are 90 cal for 1/4 c (35 g) and the 1-lb bag had 13 servings. - 11/8/10

This is my favorite soup! I make it often in cold weather. Since I live alone I freeze small portions for later meals and it's even better! I use chicken broth instead of water and increase the carrots and celery. I don't like cumin, so I eliminate it. - 11/22/17

Tasty, but calories are way off, dried split peas are 170 calories for the 1/4 cup serving that is in one serving of this soup, put this in the recipe calculator and it comes out to 188 calories for 1/8 of the recipe - 1/31/17

For those who miss the 'ham' taste, add liquid smoke. It's vegan and it definitely makes it taste more traditional. - 1/1/15

  • Easy. I thought the seasonings have this standard tasting a bit odd. I like salt, pepper, and bay leaf. Thickness was about right. - 5/25/13

I subbed thyme for the marjoram; otherwise, made to recipe, used BLIBBITY's suggestion to add curry powder. I divvied it up into 9 one cup containers, for 114 calories. More nutritious than popcorn for a snack! Add hot sauce! Add Splenda for dessert! Hot or cold. - 4/25/13

I've made this twice in 2 days it is so yummy. I cooked it on the stove (bring to boil then simmer around 45 minutes). Substituted crushed red pepper for cayenne last night. Tonight since my 11-month old grandson was eating with us I omitted the pepper and celery (I was out of celery anyway). :-) - 11/27/12

this was super easy to put together - i didn't add celery or onions, so it was a little watery for my tastes, but i tossed in a packet of onion soup mix and the flavor was really good! i cut up some canadian bacon for DH for the carnivore. :) - 12/27/10

IAJOEB - Different people will cook for different times (3-4 hours is a range, not an exact) and at varying temps. Therefore the end product will be different. The recipe says it makes 8 servings. Therefore, one serving is approximately 1/8th of the final product. All nutrition #s are approximate. - 11/16/10

This is my favorite but I change out the spices. Today I put a little chili powder in and savory. I also blended the soup so it was creamy. Yum. - 9/25/10

I like things a bit bland (or so I'm told) and so I left out a majority of the spices, and used garlic powder instead of fresh (need to go shopping). Also had to "up" the water to eight cups, cause it just got SO thick and sticky. And it was still rockin' awesome!!! - 6/20/10
