    * 4 medium sweet onions
    * 1/4 - 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
    * 4 "pats" of unsalted butter (1'' sq. by 1/3' high)

    Salt and pepper to taste


Preheat oven to 400.

Take a square baking dish (like 8'') and dump somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 a cup of balsamic vinegar in it.

Next take the sweet onions and cut off the ends and remove the skin. Place the onions on one of their cut-off ends in the baking dish full of vinegar.

Place a pat of butter on top of each onion (on the other cut off end.) Salt and pepper to taste. Cover with foil. Bake onions for about 35-45 minutes, then remove foil and turn onions over and bake for another 30-40.
