    3 1/2 c. flour
    2 tsp. cream of tartar
    1 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. baking soda
    2 c. milk


Preheat oven to 400 degreees. Sift flour, cream of tartar, salt and baking soda into a mixing bowl. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, mix with a knife until most of the flour has been soaked up. Knead with floured hands adding more milk if necessary. The dough should be soft. Shape the dough into a long loaf and place on a greased and floured baking pan. Cut across the top to allow for rising and bake for an hour or more. Cover with foil about half-way through cooking time so that it does not get too brown.
