Ingredients

    2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened and divided
    2 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced and divided
    2 tbsp light brown sugar
    1 tbsp cinnamon, divided
    1/2 tsp nutmeg
    1/2 ts cardamon
    6 eggs, lightly beaten
    2 cups milk
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    1/2 loaf ( 12 slices) sourdough bread, slightly stale

Directions

Preheat oven to 350. Lightly grease 8x8 baking dish with 1 tbsp butter. Place apples in mixing bowl with brown sugar and 1/2 tbsp cinnamon and nutmeg and toss. Place all but 12 apples in bottom of baking dish in an even layer. Place eggs, milk, vanilla, cardamon, and remaining cinnamon in mixing bowl and whisk together. Dip a slice of bread into egg mixture until well coated and place into baking dish with a slice of apple pressed on to it. Repeat until all bread is in the pan. Pour remaining egg mixture on top of bread in dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for an hour. Uncover, dot surface with remaining butter and bake 40-45 minutes or until egg mixture has set and bread has toasted. Allow to cool 5 minutes before scoopig and serving.
