I simply love this meal. I had to mix the cheese in through. The 1st time I made it I baked it on top and it was way too dry. I also kept in the tomato sauce with my no salt added tomatoes. Just amazing! A family favorite. Also it fed 8 people so less calories than you think. - 9/30/08

I really enjoyed this receipe I did make some changes . First I didn't bake it, my baking dish broke so I did a big one-pot type deal after I cooked my meat. I left out the pepper(forgot to buy), added 98% fat free cream of mush soup and added garlic. The tomatoes came with chilies. Very yummy! - 10/26/08

I made this today and I to made a few changes just like the others did. I cooked the green pepper & onion with the meat. I added cream of mushroom soup and I didn't have any orgeano so I used thyme instead. And combined a bunch of cheese with it and put some on the top. And that really did the trick - 7/26/11

This was very good and it made enough for my family to have it for two nights. I made a couple of changes, as suggested in other posts. I added 1 15oz can of tomato sauce, fresh oregano, thyme and basil and a whole green pepper. I only added 1 1/2 tsp of cumin and made it all in one pot, - 7/23/09

I forgot the can of tomatoes at the store so I used salsa. It was still a little dry so maybe adding some sort of sauce would be good. - 5/11/09

It was good. I mistakenly used fat free cheese and it just dried out on the top so had to add some additional regular cheese to melt. - 12/15/08

It would be nice if the photo reflected the actual product. The picture shows typical Hamburger Helper. However, the recipe sounds a lot more interesting. I'll rate it when I give it a try. - 6/2/17

Extremely delicious - it was very hard to stop at just one serving!! I added 1 can of 97% fat free cream of mushroom soup to the browned meat before adding in all the remaining ingredients, and only used 1C of cooked macaroni. We had leftovers the next day which were even more delicious. Thanks!! - 1/21/10

I threw this recipe into a "recipe analyzer" on another site. It says that for 6 servings, they would be 170 grams each, but that they would carry 426 calories per serving. Not sure why there would be such a difference... - 8/22/09

  • SUNSETBREEZE05 I HIGHLY AGREE !!! It says it makes makes 6,,,, but that means physically dividing it up ,,, which takes time when ALL you want to do is EAT IT !!! Though it is in a baking dish and cutting it into 6 portion isn't hard, BUT !!!! I don't like it from the oven,, so it was not as easy. - 3/23/17

  • Mostly gross. It was like a bad Mac and cheese, but there's no milk product so not creamy, and the addition of tomatoes just makes it taste like ketchup (which some people like with Mac and cheese but I don't). Not a fan. - 2/28/17

  • Well..I was disappointed. ?.after reading reviews I perpared this using one can of cream of mushroom soup I also added the cheese in with the mix before baking and added extra cheese on top at the end it still was not very cheesy and the green peppers was a bit much a little too much seasoning and w - 11/1/16

  • I took out 2 cups of cooked macaroni since it was too much for the meat mixture. Should have added some of the cheese to the meat mixture before baking. It's a tad dry so you may need to add some water to the meat. It's very similar to what we call goulash in western PA. - 9/26/16

  • I understand a few tweaks to a recipe, but this one never called for cream of mushroom soup so without it, what's the recipe really taste like?? How about just using low fat cheddar cheese soup to make it creamier & more like a mac 'n cheese instead of a mushroom casserole w/ some cheese? - 6/2/16

  • I added a can of light enchilada soup since I did not have cream of mushroom. Next time might do half the cheese with pepper jack to add a kick but my family was good with it as is. For years I was known for my decadent full fat baked Mac and cheese so any lighter version they are happy with is good - 1/20/16

  • I reduced the spices by half, mixed cheese in with the hamburger mixture along with a can of cream of mushroom soup, and added a half a cup of fat free sour cream. Baked for ten minutes, put a little cheese on top and baked for five mite minutes. Very good! - 11/3/15

  • This needs some help. I was hoping for the picture and got nothing remotely close. Cumin is REALLY over-powering and there isn't much flavor beyond that. Also, that wasn't "cheesy" at all. The cheese got lost in all the meat and pasta. - 7/2/15

Was this review helpful?   yes  No
  • This recipe was really good and easy. I cooked my onion and bell pepper with the ground beef. I also added the cream of mushroom (98% fat free) and added the cheese into the mixture then baked for 5 minutes, added a little cheese on top, and finished baking for an additional 5 minutes.
