Amazing steel-cut oatmeal

4 cups water
1 cup dry steel-cut oats
1/2 cup brown rice syrup, or to taste
1/2 cup ground or sliced almonds
1/2 cup craisins or dried cherries
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup ground flax seed
2 T cacao nibs, if desired
1 T vanilla
1 t maple flavoring
Cinnamon to taste
Brown rice syrup has a very low glycemic rating, which makes this much more tolerable for those with blood sugar issues. It isn't very sweet, so experiment and find the quantity that works best for you.
If you have a plastic liner, put it in the crockpot first. Cleaning crusty oatmeal out of a crockpot is no fun, and wastes a lot of the finished product.
Top with milk (dairy or otherwise) to taste. I also like to add some fresh fruit, and a dab of Madhava's maple-flavored agave nectar.
