Introduction

This was my favorite cake growing up and my Mom made me one for my birthday every year. This was my favorite cake growing up and my Mom made me one for my birthday every year.

Ingredients

    1 1/2 cups flour
    1 cup white sugar
    3 tbsp cocoa, unsweetened, stirred to remove lumps
    1 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    5 tbsp oil, melted margarine (shown in nutrition) or butter
    1 tsp vanilla
    1 tsp vinegar (white used in nutrition)
    1 cup warm water

Directions

1. Place flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt in an ungreased 8 x 8 inch square pan or a 9 inch round cake pan and stir together until there are no white streaks
2. Make a large hole and two small holes in the mixture (keep them separate)
3. Pour the oil into the large hole. Put the Vanilla in another and the vinegar in the last hole.
4. Quickly pour the warm water over everything and mix until all the dry ingredients are moist and well blended.
5. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35 - 40 minutes or until done (toothpick comes out clean when poked in the middle)
6. Instead of icing you can spread some chocolate chips over the top while the cake is still hot, then spread them around when they are melted (not included in nutrition).

Serving Size: Makes 1 x 9 inch diameter round cake OR 1 8x8 square pan
