    6 cups flour
    3/4 cup sugar
    1/2 teaspoon anise (optional)
    1 large (2 ounces) cake yeast or 3 packets (1/4 ounce each) dry yeast
    3/4 cup tepid 1% milk
    6 large eggs, beaten
    1/2 cup canola oil
    1/4 cup melted butter
    extra flour, as needed


This bread is at its finest when toasted.


Mix the 6 cups flour, salt, sugar, and anise in a large mixing bowl. Form it into a well.

Dissolve the yeast in the milk. Put the milk, eggs, oil, and butter in the well.

Mix the dough, adding flour as needed. Knead dough vigorously. Let rise until doubled in size.

Shape dough into four loaves, and let rise again.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake in a 300-degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes.
