Ingredients

1 cake of tofu (12 ounces), pressed

1 TBSP plus 2 tsp soy sauce
    1 TBSP water
    1 TBSP dark sesame oil
    1 TSP tomato paste (optional)
    1 TSP rice vinegar
1 TSP mild honey or sugar
    1/2 TSP groun anise*

*grinding 3/4 to 1 tsp of whole anise seeds with a mortar and pestle or small electric grinder will yield about 1/2 TSP ground

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Cut the pressed tofu horizontally into 3 slices. Stack the slices and then cut through all three layers on the two diagnals, making an X. This will yield 12 triangles of tofu. Combine all of the sauce ingredients in a bowl and stir until well blended.

Arrange the triangles in a baking dish and cover with the sauce. Bake, uncovered, for about 35 minutes, carefully turning the tofu with a spatula every 10 minutes. When the tofu has a taut, seared appearance and the sauce has mostly evaporated, it is ready to serve.
