These burgers are moist and tasty, with a mild sweetness. These burgers are moist and tasty, with a mild sweetness.
Number of Servings: 8

    1lb 93% ground beef
.5 cup green bell pepper, chopped
    .5 cup onions
.5 cup of old fashioned oatmeal or rolled oats
    1 medium apple
    1 tbs chili powder
    1 tbs garlic powder
    Salt and pepper to taste

This recipe will make 8 small burgers, or 4 larger ones. If you don't have rolled oats or old fashioned oat meal, you can substitute with bread crumbs; I just like using the oats for the fiber and the nutty flavor. The apple is there for a surprise sweet kick, which can be left out or substituted with something like golden raisins or even dehydrated plums! Just reconstitute them in some water for a few minutes first.

Prepare a 9 x 13 baking sheet with a few spritzes of cooking spray.

Sautee the bell pepper, apple, and onions. I put a dash of olive oil in the pan, but you can use a cooking spray or other kind of oil. Once the apples are soft and onions are translucent, remove the pan from heat.

While that cools, mix the ground beef, oatmeal, and the seasonings together. When well mixed, add the sauteed fruit and vegetables and mix again. The mixture should be a little loose, but the ingredients should be well incorporated.

Mold the beef mixture into 8 patties and place on your baking sheet. Place the sheet in your refrigerator for 30 minutes to an hour so that they can set.

Once set, place sheet in a preheated 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes, flipping over once.

Fan-freaking-tastic! I made these burgers for my husband and I on Super Bowl Sunday and we LOVED them. Because I didn't have chili powder or garlic powder I just substituted with taco seasoning. It was still great! The oatmeal is a great idea for fiber, and you can't even taste it! - 2/3/09

very good! I wasn't expecting this to be SOOO good. Didn't have apples, bell peppers or regular oatmeal. So I used baked apple oatmeal, salsa and jalapeņos. My husband loved it. But think we'll use regular oatmeal next time! - 5/7/10

  • I've tried this with the spices and the veggies, but not with the apple and oats. Planning on making this for dinner tomorrow night with the oats and dates instead of apples. I've never been big on sweet in my savory but I'm willing to give this a try. Excited to see how it turns out! - 2/9/13

  • I used applesauce instead of Apples, boxed bread crumbs instead of oats and package of onion soup mix instead of the spices. I really loved the hamburgers! Oh, I also cooked mine in the toaster oven. - 1/25/12

  • The taste of the burgers was awesome! However, I used very lean beef and had trouble getting the burgers to hold together. The crumbled badly. I think fattier meat would have worked better and I'm not sure I want to use fattier meat. Still, the taste was very good. - 6/14/10
