Ingredients
-
1lb 93% ground beef
.5 cup green bell pepper, chopped
.5 cup onions
.5 cup of old fashioned oatmeal or rolled oats
1 medium apple
1 tbs chili powder
1 tbs garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
This recipe will make 8 small burgers, or 4 larger ones. If you don't have rolled oats or old fashioned oat meal, you can substitute with bread crumbs; I just like using the oats for the fiber and the nutty flavor. The apple is there for a surprise sweet kick, which can be left out or substituted with something like golden raisins or even dehydrated plums! Just reconstitute them in some water for a few minutes first.
Prepare a 9 x 13 baking sheet with a few spritzes of cooking spray.
Sautee the bell pepper, apple, and onions. I put a dash of olive oil in the pan, but you can use a cooking spray or other kind of oil. Once the apples are soft and onions are translucent, remove the pan from heat.
While that cools, mix the ground beef, oatmeal, and the seasonings together. When well mixed, add the sauteed fruit and vegetables and mix again. The mixture should be a little loose, but the ingredients should be well incorporated.
Mold the beef mixture into 8 patties and place on your baking sheet. Place the sheet in your refrigerator for 30 minutes to an hour so that they can set.
Once set, place sheet in a preheated 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes, flipping over once.
