Ingredients
-
2.5 cup Flour, white
.25 cup (8 fl oz) Water, tap
1 ounce Yeast, bakers
.5 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Salt
6 tsp Granulated Sugar
8 tbsp Shortening, Crisco
1 cup Buttermilk
Tips
If you don't have buttermilk or if you have souring regular milk, you can "make" buttermilk by adding 1 T lemon juice to milk and reducing amount of milk by that same 1 Tbsp.
Directions
In a small bowl, Dissolve yeast in warm water (not too hot, or it will kill the live yeast culture.) In mixing bowl, use sifter to sift in flour, salt, sugar, baking soda, and baking powder. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut in crisco shortening till crumbly. Add yeast/water, and buttermilk and mix till doughy, not too long or it will get tough. Using plenty of flour on cupboard or flat surface, knead dough just a few times. Roll out to about 1/2" thick. Cut with medium sized biscuit cutter to make 15 biscuits. Set on cookie pan about 1/2" apart. Let rise 15 min. Preheat oven to 400. Bake about 12-15 min on the middle rack of oven. They should be lightly browned or they will be too doughy in the middle.
