Introduction

Makes 4 cups - each serving 1 TBSP

Apple butter is a highly concentrated form of apple sauce, produced by long, slow cooking of apples with cider or water to a point where the sugar in the apples caramelizes, turning the apple butter a deep brown. The concentration of sugar gives apple butter a much longer shelf life as a preserve than applesauce. Apple butter was a popular way of using apples in colonial America, and well into the 19th century. The term “butter” refers to the thick, soft consistency, and apple butter’s use as a spread for breads. Typically seasoned with cinnamon, cloves, lemon juice and other spices, apple butter may be spread on buttered toast, used as a side dish, an ingredient in baked goods, or as a condiment.

    Incredible!
I add a large cinnamon stick to apples, no sugar. If I cook it less time I have applesauce and keep going and it turns a deep rich color of applebutter. I don't add any liquid. Makes it so easy to use the slow cooker for this. Mix of apples peeled, sliced, and I fill the crock full of apples. - 10/16/16

Recipe for apple butter sounds delicious and I
am on my way to buy the apples now. But, where is the butter? Lemon butter spread has butter in it but not this recipe. Should it be called apple spread?

    Very Good
Yum! I added a teaspoon of cinnamon. Very good but I think maybe a bit less of the brown sugar mixture next time. Thanks for sharing! - 10/10/10
