    1cup Mung Dal
    !/4 cup cracked Wheat
    1 cup mixed cubed vegetables(French Beans,Cauliflower,Carrots,Peas etc.)
    4 slit green chillies(optional)
    1/2 tsp.Turmeric Powder
    Salt to taste (sea salt)
    1 pinch Asafoetida(hing) Powder
    For the Tempering
    11/2 tbsp.clarified Butter
    3 pods of Garlic shelled and chopped
    1/2tsp of Cumin seeds
    4-5 dry red Chillies (broken)
    1/2tsp. Asafoetida powder
    1" stick of Cinnamon
    4-6 cloves
    8-10 peppercorns


Boil Mung Dal till 3/4 cooked.Add cracked wheat and asafoetida powder and cook on slow fire till the two ingredients are well mixed and almost done.Add Vegetables,Green Chillies,Turmeric Powder,Salt to taste and simmer.The vegetables should be cooked 'al dente'.Remove from fire and keep aside.Heat clarified butter on slow fire and add the Garlic,Cumin,Cinnamon,Cloves and the Peppercorns.When these begin to crackle add the broken dry Red Chillies and the Asafoetida powder.Pour the hot Tempering over the semi-solid Khichri and place a lid to cover it immediately.This seals in the flavour.Mix well and serve hot.

    I make a similar one without garlic and veggies. In addition, i grind raw coconut and coriander seeds with the masala. - 6/15/10

    This is the way a Bengali friend of my Mother's made it----I just love hot steaming Khichri---one of my comfort Foods, specially in the Rains---will make it your way the next time!!
