    1 cup yellow split peas
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch slices
    7 green cardamom pods
    2 cups vegetable broth
    2 cups water
    1 medium onion, chopped
    1 tsp garam marsala
    1 tsp ground cumin
    1 tbsp butter
    pinch of cayene pepper
    lemon juice
    salt & pepper to taste

Add broth, cardamom and peas to a stock pot and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer and cook for 15 minutes. Add sweet potato and cook until tender. In a saute pan melt butter and cook onions until tender and translucent. Add cumin and garam marsala and cook until onion starts to carmelize. Set aside.

Remove cardamom pods and puree 1/2 of pea mixture until smooth, adding small amounts of water if needed. Return to pot and add spiced onion mixture. Add cayene pepper, salt and lemon juice to taste. Bring to simmer. Serve with chopped cilantro and very thin lemon slices.
