Introduction
This sauce recipe was based on a Jo Mama's World Famous Spaghetti sauce recipe that I modified for taste. When I make this sauce, it quickly disappears in my house. Number of Servings: 6
Ingredients
-
1 small onion, chopped
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
1 (28 oz.) can diced tomatoes
2 (6 oz.) cans tomato paste
2 (15 oz.) cans tomato sauce
1 cup water (for simmering, I simmer for about 1 hour, adjust the amount of water for less simmering time)
2 teaspoons basil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon ground thyme
2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes
1 1/2 teaspoons brown sugar
1/8-1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (Depending on taste)
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup red wine (I use a good quality Cabernet)
Directions
Serves 8
(Serving Size = 3/4 Cup Servings)
Cook onions in stockpot on medium heat, stirring occasionally until onions are softened.
Add garlic and crushed red pepper. Cook until garlic is soft. Be careful not to brown.
Add tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce and water.
Add oregano, thyme, basil, parsley, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and salt.
Stir well. Do not bring sauce to a boil.
Stir in red wine.
Reduce medium heat to low. Simmer on low, stirring frequently for about an hour.
Enjoy!
This sauce freezes nicely. I sometimes make this sauce and freeze it for other dishes I enjoy making. I have a turkey meatball recipe listed on this web site that goes well with this recipe. I recently added a Baked Ziti and Eggplant Lasagna recipe that also uses this sauce in it.

I haven't made this recipe, but have made Jo Mama's without the meat. My question is about the nutritional info listed above. What is the source of protein? If this has six servings, that would be 35.4 grams of protein in the entire batch. From what? If I'm missing something, please let me know. - 3/19/13

This is basically Jo Mama's (quite possibly the best spaghetti sauce ever created). I was glad to find the calories & nutrituion for this sauce. I make this all the time in double batches and I do use the Italian sausage as in Jo Mama's sauce. I would use the Jo Mama's recipe @ foodnetwork.com - 6/4/11

I had everything but the thyme and parsley and I did not add wine.Very good! I did add a couple of tsp of ital seasoning in place of the thyme and added some sun dried tomatoes.I think next time I will only use 1 tsp of basil as it turned out just a little sweeter than I am use to.Thanks for sharing - 2/3/11

Wonderful recipe! Easily the best spaghetti sauce I've ever had. Made recipe exactly as stated then transferred to a crockpot to simmer as we would be out for a few hours in the afternoon. It was thick and tasty, fabulous with meatballs and whole grain pasta! Thank you so much for sharing!!! - 1/14/10
