Introduction
This are my Nan's old time recipe. It's a Newfoundland tradition to have a tea bun with a cup of tea, and you always use Carnation condensed milk in your tea.
A tea bun is kind of like a regular biscuit with a little sweetness. You can omit the raisins, or substitue for some other dried fruit, if desired.
I'm so glad I have the will power to keep away from these buns, though I don't make them very often because others in my family don't have the same amount of will power. This are my Nan's old time recipe.

Ingredients
-
3 c. whtie flour
1/2 block (1 c.) hard margarine, cold and cubed up
Pinch Salt
1/2 package (1 c.) raisins
3/4 c. granulated sugar
5 tsp. baking powder
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/4 c. condensed milk + 1/4 c. cold water
Directions
Put all ingredients in a big flat bottomed bowl, EXCEPT for the eggs, milk or water. Stir to distribute evenly. Rub in the margarine (using your hands) to make a smooth, pale yellow mix (there should be no big lumps of margarine).
Pour on top the eggs and milk/water mixture. Stir until a gooey dough is formed. Divide into 12 balls (small tennis ball sized blobs). Lay into a 9x13 pan, 3 buns x 4 buns.
Bake at 375 F for 25 minutes, or until lightly brown on top, and toothpick comes out clean, not doughey.

I have searched/tried a number of biscuit recipes with no luck duplicating the biscuits from childhood. Nan's Tea Buns are by far the best, and b/c dough is formed into balls and placed in a 9x13 dish, the buns come out of the oven looking like old fashioned tea biscuits! Dense, moist & delicious. - 5/14/13
