    1 1/2 cups water
    3/4 cup ketchup
    1/2 cup cider vinegar
    1/4 cup worcestershire sauce
    2 Tbsp chili powder
    1 Tbsp paprika
    1 Tbsp mustard
    1 Tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
    1/2 tsp black pepper
    1/2 tsp brown sugar
    1/4 tsp liquid smoke

Combine all ingredients in a large heavy saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook the sauce over moderately high heat, stirring frequently, until it is thick and richly flavored, about 30 minutes. Let the barbecue sauce cool completely and then transfer it to a jar. Refrigerate for at least 2 days before serving.

Sauce makes 1 1/2 cups; can be refrigerated for up to 1 month.
