Whole Wheat Apple Brown Betty

Ingredients
1 cup brown sugar1 tsp ground cinnamon1/4 tsp ground nutmeg1/4 tsp ground cloves1/4 tsp salt2 cups (about 6 slices) whole wheat bread cut into very small cubes3 cups pared, cored, and sliced tart apples1/4 cup water3 Tbsp lemon juicezest of one lemon2 Tbsp unsalted butter
Directions
Blend sugar, spices, and salt. Arrange 1/3 of the cubed bread in a greased 2-qt. baking dish. Top with 1/2 of the sliced apples. Sprinkle 1/2 of the sugar mixture onto the apple slices. Repeat this process finishing with a layer of bread cubes. Mix water, lemon juice, and zest and pour over layers. Dot with tiny bits of butter and bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
