Maggie's lentils, barley and yellow split peas stew

Barley, pearled, raw, .5 cupLentils, .5 cupYellow split peas, .5 cupOnions, raw, 1 cup, chopped, half red, half whiteCelery, raw, 1 stalk, medium (7-1/2" - 8" long)Carrots, raw, 1 cup, choppedZucchini, .13 cup, slicedBay Leaf, .5 tsp, crumbledCumin, ground, .5 tspPeppers, sweet, red, fresh, .25 cup, choppedGround beef, lean, 6 ozGarlic, 2 tspWater 4 cups
In a crockpot, combine all ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste and let cook for three hours on high or five on low. Remove from heat when split peas and lentils are about to be done, so not all the liquid is absorbed. The final result should be a stew, not dry.
Makes about 12 half-cup servings. Serve with toasted french bread or rice (not included in calorie count)
