Sylvia's Chocolate Cake with Fluffy White Frosting

2 c. flour1 t. salt1 t. baking powder2 t. baking soda3/4 c. cocoa2 c. sugar1 c. unsweetened applesauce1 c. hot coffee1 c. milk2 eggs1 t. vanillaIcing1 c. milk5 T. flour1/2 c. butter1/2 c. shortening1 c. sugar1 t. vanilla
Sift dry ingredients together, add applesauce, coffee and milk. Beat on medium for 2 minutes, then add eggs and vanilla. Beat 2 more minutes (batter will be thin). Pour into greased 9 x 13 pan or 24 cupcake liners. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes.
Icing
Cook milk and flour over medium-high heat until thickened. Cover and refrigerate. Beat butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla until creamy. Add to cooled milk mixture and beat for 10 minutes.
