Sorry I took so long to reply!
In NZ we call it castor sugar - regular sugar is much coarser so it might detract from the smoothness of the custard but the comments above probably help!
Also try my low-fat warm chocolate pudding is similar but so pretty and glossy and chocolatey :)

I sprinkle some Splenda brown sugar on top right after they come out of the oven so it melts and is kind of like the brown sugar topping. - 7/25/11

I used 1% milk, and used regular sugar, with no problems with it. Although, it did take longer to set. And the 3 star rating is because it said to lightly beat the egg... but I beat it pretty well anyway, well... some egg settled at the top and made a scrambled egg type spots. - 11/19/10

I used baker's sugar, which is a very fine grain sugar, and it turned out great! I loved it!! So easy to make. - 10/13/10

Castor sugar is a superfine sugar that dissolves faster than regular granular sugar. Slightly more coarse than powdered sugar. More info online - search "Castor Sugar". - 10/10/10
