Molasses Sugar Cookies

3/4 cup shortening1 cup sugar1/4 cup molasses1 egg2 tsp baking soda2 cup sifted all-purpose flour2 tsp cloves1/2 tsp ginger1 tsp cinnamon1/2 tsp salt
1. Melt shortening in a 3 or 4 quart saucepan over low heat.
2. Remove from heat; let cool.
3. Add sugar, molasses, and egg; beat well.
4. Sift together flour, soda, cloves, ginger, salt, and cinnamon: add to first mixture. Mix well. Chill.
5. Form 1-inch balls, roll in granulated sugar, and place on greased cookie sheet 2 inches apart.
6. Bake in moderately hot oven (375 degrees) for 8 to 10 minutes.
