Mare's Scone base

Ingredients
Directions
3 1/2 c flour (I use "wholewheat and bran")1/2 cup sugar (I use splenda)2 tsp Baking powder1 tsp baking soda1/2 tsp salt1/2 c shortening ( I use canola oil)2 eggs and enough buttermilk to make 1 3/4 cups (I use regular 1% milk and add a little lemon juice to sour milk)
Mix all together and drop in blobs just smaller than your fist onto baking sheets.
Bake at 375 degrees for 16 minutes (I actually prefer to bake at 350 degrees for about the same time).
They will be a golden brown when ready (not dark)
Note - really nice with dried cranberries and/or raisins
Or - add some diced ham and a little shredded cheddar (omit the sugar if you do this).
The recipe nutritional count includes Craisins so you will need to adjust for ham and cheese scones.
