Lemon Asparagus and Pasta

3 ounces asparagus spears, fresh or frozen2 ounces pasta, penne rigate, uncooked1/2 tablespoon mayonnaise, fat free1/2 tablespoon broth, vegetable, low sodium1 teaspoon olive oil1/2 teaspoon lemon juice1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard1/4 teaspoon garlic, chopped1/8 teaspoon black pepper2 tablespoons cheese, sharp cheddar, shredded2 tablespoons green onion, chopped
Bring a large covered saucepan of water to boil over high heat. Wash and trim asparagus and cut diagonally into 2-inch pieces.
Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package directions for al dente, adding the asparagus about 3 minutes before the pasta is done.
Drain pasta and asparagus in a colander, cool under cold running water, and drain again. Set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, vegetable broth, oil, lemon juice, mustard, garlic and pepper.
Add the pasta and asparagus to the dressing, and toss to coat well. Sprinkle cheese and onions over pasta mixture.
