Such a tasty cake! For a healthier version - Use egg beaters instead of whole eggs, or egg whites. Substitute unsweetened applesauce for the oil. Add the dry pudding mix directly to fat free or lite cool whip and combine till dissolved. Either way, this cake is amazing - 4/22/09

This cake, no matter what flavor of jello you use and whether you top it with the cool whip or not, is a wonderful refreshing cake in the summer time!!! - 4/20/09

I use a can of zero sprite instead of the eggs, water & oil
it turned out great and my husband wants it again.I am

Use 2 different jellos, Red and green. Cut the cake into 2 pieces, put a different color in each, put cool whip between. I make this all the time for Christmas.

@BABY GIRL and KAY-AICH, I find that if you post even the most non-healthy recipes here, the community will find ways to make it healthier by adding their suggestions. So old family favourites get a chance to be better for you... That's how I see it, anyway. I - 2/11/11

This is a much better alternative to regular cake/frosting and tastes just as good. Thanks for the recipe! - 7/8/09

I grew up eating Jell-o cake and love it! My mom used to make it every summer. She used a toothpick to make even rows of holes before pouring the jell-o on top. - 4/29/09

Besides making a healthier version, keep in mind that 1/12 of a cake is a big serving! I've been looking for a lower sugar version of this recipe! I tried making the glaze with Splenda & cornstarch combined in the blender & adding lemon juice -for a lemon cake. It was OK, but I'd like to try this! - 4/24/09

This cake is a winner with our family! Eventhough we never tried the altered "healthier" version, we found it to be just as yummy, no matter what color jello you use. - 4/17/09

While I'm sure this would be good, it doesn't seem to be too healthy at all... - 4/16/09

My mother in law makes this quite a bit but used Strawberry Jell-o!! Excellent cake!! Will have to try it with the reduced sugar, as she always used the white cake mix! - 4/14/09
