German Red Cabbage

Ingredients
1 medium head red cabbage, shredded1 medium onion, chopped2 medium apples, peeled and cored, sliced thinly1 cup water1/4 cup vinegar2 equal packets4 peppercorns or 1/4 tsp ground4 whole cloves or 1/4 tsp ground
Directions
Mix all ingrediants in large pot, and cook at medium-low heat until cabbage is tender.

Refrigerates well. Can be eaten hot or cold.

    Based on what I had on hand, I used:
    1 apple, pear infused vinegar, ground black pepper, minced onions, & butter

    My Oma never used peppercorns, but 2-4 bay leaves in her Red Cabbage,so that is what I do also. My recipe is similar to this, except no peppercorn, but bay leaves. Be sure to remove bay leaves before serving. Oma used real sugar-Equal did not exist. I use raw sugar instead of Equal. - 5/11/10
