Pears in Cider

6 hard ie unripe pearsA vanilla pod 2 large cinnamon sticks 1 pint dry cider100 ml sugar 20ml arrow root
Peel the pears, leaving the stalks on. Lay them whole in a casserole dish. Preheat the oven to 150C.
Put 1pt of dry cider into a saucepan with the sugar and cinnamon sticks. Bring to the boil, stirring to make sure the sugar dissolves properly. Add the vanilla pod and pour over the pears. Cover the casserole and bake slowly for 3 hours turning the pears over half way through.
After 3 hrs transfer the pears to a serving bowl to cool and pour the liquid back into the saucepan discarding the cinnamon and vanilla. In a cup mix 1 level dessertspoon of arrowroot with a little cold water and add this to the cider. Bring to the boil stirring until the mixture thickens slightly. Pour over the pears and allow to cool.
Serve with kreem or custard.
