1 large onionabout 1 cup of baby carrots1 pound short ribs (flanken) - cut pieces in between bones3/4 cup pearled barley3/4 cup cholent mix (found in kosher aisle, but can use any combination of dry beans)1 to 2 Tbsp each of garlic powder, onion powder, & paprika1 tsp. salt1/4 cup ketchup1/4 cup honeyEnogh water to cover all ingredients
Add ingredients to crock pot in this order:
onions
carrots
beef
beans
barley
spices
ketchup
honey
Add water to cover all ingredients. Cook on high for 4 to 6 hours. Reduce to low & let cook overnight. This is a traditional Jewish dish made for lunch on the Sabbath as no cooking is allowed to take place on the Sabbath. The temp. is turned to low before the Sabbath starts on Friday night & then this delicious dish is enjoyed for lunch on the Sabbath itself.
