Ingredients

1/2 cup masoor (red) lentils1/2 cup toor or moong (yellow) lentils4 cups water1-1/2 t salt3/4 t turmeric2 T butter or olive oil1 t garam masalapinch asafoetida powder1 t cumin seed1.5 t chili pepper
1) Combine dals and rinse five times, removing any foreign objects. Add dal, water, salt and turmeric and bring to boil. (if using pressure cooker, heat until one whistle; lower to medium heat and four minutes; remove from heat and rest 15 minutes). With regular stove top pan, boil 30-40 minutes to desired consistency.
2) Melt butter (or oil) in fry pan. Add asafoetida powder, garam masala, cumin, and chili pepper. Stir fry one minute. Add to lentils.
3) Serve with chapatis, naan, or rice. When served as it, it also makes a fine lentil soup.
