Mom's Rainy Day Soup

Ingredients
2 large (about 8 oz each) beef shanks.6 large chicken thighs.1 large carrot, peeled and cut in large chunks.1 large onion, diced.4 medium cloves garlic, minced.1 large stalk celery, diced.1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper.1+1/2 teaspoon salt.1/2 cup diced cabbage.1/2 cup diced turnip or rutabaga. 6 cups water.
Directions
1) Place everything into a large stock pot.
2) Bring it to a boil, and then turn to medium low, and allow to simmer for 2 to 2+1/2 hours. Check the seasoning, and adjust if desired.
3) Strain the soup into a large serving bowl. Separate the meat and vegetables, and place onto a serving platter.
