Dal with green lentils

Ingredients
2 c. dry green lentils12 c. watersalt to taste4 c. diced tomatoes2 large onions, chopped4 tsp. minced garlic2 tsp. ground ginger4 Tbsp. butter2 tsp. ground turmeric2 tsp ground cumin
Directions
Add all ingredients except salt and tomatoes to a large pot. Bring to a boil, then simmer until lentils are very well cooked and falling apart. Then add tomatoes and salt to taste (no salt is added to the calculations for this recipe). Cook for an additional 20-30 minutes, and serve as-is, or over steamed rice.

Makes approximately 14 servings 1 c. each
