Curried Split Pea Soup

Ingredients
1 pound dry split peas, rinsed and drained1 pound smoked pork hocks or meaty ham bone1 1/2 cups cubed cooked ham (about 8 oz.)1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped celery1 cup chopped onion1 cup coarsely chopped carrot3 to 4 tsps curry powder (or less - to taste)1 tbls dried marjoram, crushed2 bay leaves1/4 tsp ground pepper6 cups water
Directions
1. In a 5 - 6 quart slow cooker, combine split peas, ham hocks, pork celery, onion, carrot, curry powder, marjoram, bay leaves and pepper. Stir in the water.
2. Cover and cook on low heat setting for 9 - 11 hours or on high heat setting for 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 hours.
3. Discard bay leaves. Remove ham hocks. When ham hocks are cool enough to handle, remove meat from bones, chop the meat , then add meat to the soup.

    My husband and I loved this. We seasoned to our own taste. This is a versatile dish and can be used as a snack between meals when hunger strikes and you just need something warm and filling. Or add a wrap with meat and veggies and make it a meal. - 11/5/08

    Yummy!! I didn't add the full amount of curry (I could have added more, turns out), and I added two cloves of garlic. I also let the soup cool a bit and skimmed off as much fat as I could. We all loved it! - 4/11/07
