Serbian Baked Beans (Prebranac)

500 g dried butter (lima) beans400-500 g onions1/4 c. olive oil1 tbsp. hot paprikadash black pepperdash salt
Soak the beans in plenty of water (water should be 2-3 inches above beans) for 8-12 hours.
Rinse thoroughly, then bring to boil in fresh water (3 c. water for every 1 c. beans is a good guideline).
Simmer for 90 minutes.
Drain beans, reserving about 2 c. liquid.
Use a bit of the olive oil to grease baking dish. Saute onions in remaining oil, until golden brown. Add paprika, salt, and pepper and simmer for another 30-60 seconds.
Add 1/2 onions to baking dish. Layer 1/2 beans on top. Add remaining onions, then remaining beans.
Cover with foil and bake at 350 F/175 C for 60 minutes. Remove foil after 60 minutes, and bake a further 15 minutes.
