Great Grandma's Bread

Ingredients

2 tsp. yeast1/4 cup warm water1/2 cup sugar1 egg1/2 cup half and half1 cup milk, 2%1 tsp. salt1/4 cup shortening4 cups whole wheat flour
Dissolve yeast in water, add 1/2 cup sugar, and stir a little. Let stand about 10-15 minutes, until it starts to bubble a little.
Scald cup of milk, add shortening and salt, remove from heat. Add well-beaten eggs and 1/2 cup cream. Then add yeast mixture and blend well. Now add only half of sifted flour and blend together. Let rise a little (15 minutes) then add remaining flour. Cover, let rise until double in size. Punch down and allow to rise again. Punch down and allow to rise a third time. Place in loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes until light brown.
Makes one large loaf or two small ones.
Note: I've also made this recipe in my Cuisinart bread machine successfully.
