Ingredients
Masoor Dal, 1 cup (remove)Water, tap, 3 cup (8 fl oz) (remove)Chili powder, .25 tsp (remove)canola oil, 2 tbsp (remove)cumin seeds (jeera), 1 tsp (remove)Onions, raw, .50 cup, chopped (remove)Red Ripe Tomatoes, 1 large whole (3" dia) (remove)haldi (turmeric powder), 0.25 tsp (remove)Salt, 1 tsp (remove)
Directions
*Soak 1 cup of masoor dal in 3 cups of water for 15 minutes.
*heat 1-2 tbs oil in pressure cooker
*add jeera seeds until slightly brown
*add chopped onions and saute until light goldent brown.
*add chopped onion and allow oil to seperate
*add chili and haldi (turmeric) powders and stir for 1-2 min.
*add salt to taste
*add dal and water
*pressure cook for 1 whistle; let steam release on its own.

    @LinguistMarcie - yes, you can cook this without using a pressure cooker. After the daal boils cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes. You can always add more water or simmer longer to get the right consistency for you. - 9/1/09
