I've actually made this before in the past, and if you use chocolate cake mix and a can of diet dr. pepper w/ light cool whip, it tastes like devil dogs. Very very good. - 1/19/09

Excellent! I make it lots of ways but the favorite is coconut cake mix, 1 can 7-up, poke holes in the cake, then top with sugar free/fat free cheesecake pudding (follow directions on the box), and 1 tub of free cool whip with 1 teaspoon of coconut extract mixed in. BEST Coconut cake I've EVER had! - 8/7/07

We really enjoyed this. I used a Betty Crocker Triple Fudge Cake mix and Raspberry Setzer. I served it with cool whip, but preferred it without it. I just undercooked it and let if finish baking while it cooled. Can't wait to try other flavors! Thank you! - 4/7/09

I was skeptical that it would turn out without the eggs and oil. It was fantastic! - 4/17/09

The First day I made this, I didn't like it at all. I found it just to leave a weird taste. (I made it with Diet Dr. Pepper) I put it in the Fridge, and my husband tried it the next day, and he said he loved it. (He hates cake.) I tried it, and oddly enough it was great! So stick it in the fridge! - 3/5/09

ive made this using strawberry cake mix and a diet sprite and it always turns out perfect :) I've put them in mini muffin tins before and took them to my daughters day care and the kids loved it! - 1/24/08

Used yellow cake with Diet Pepsi Strawberries and Cream. I was surprised at how soft and moist the cake was. It does not rise much but it's tasty. We put strawberries and whipped cream on top. Even hubby liked it and he hates "diet" soda. I will use flavored seltzer next time for a cleaner taste. - 6/13/07

I tried this and it was really no good. You can also do the same thing with just water or applesauce, honestly, and end up with something less full of chemicals. - 3/23/07

I made this recipe with an additional ingredient. I added one egg white and it made it a little more fluffy. I used diet 7up and strawberry cake mix and I topped it will Cool Whip Free. Really yummy ( : - 3/18/07

I make this with yellow moist cake mix, sprite zero and a lb of frozen fruit (usually strawberries). Don't mix in the SprIte, just pour it over it. It comes out more like a cobbler. - 2/15/09

this is a great way for a sweet treat! I have also used the packaged muffin mixes (like the cinnabon muffin mix) w/the diet pop and they are great too!! - 11/3/08

It's okay, but the recipe on this site for Pumkin Muffins (using canned pumpkin plus cake mix) is much better and can be adapted for chocolate and other flavors. Of the two, the pumpkin version is much better - I could really detect a strange aftertaste to the diet soda cake. - 10/16/08

I used white cake mix and Jone's soda sugar free black cherry. It has no cola just black cherry. it was very good, and amazingly moist, but crumbled a bit. The soda I used had aspartame in it, and I didn't die from the poison that heating it created. - 2/16/08

My family really liked this. Aspartame is safe to cook with it just loses sweetness with prolonged baking or cooking.(source internet) Cake mix has sugar in it anyway and we should all cut down on refined sugar. Once in awhile will not hurt you. I used white cake mix w/ diet red pop. Yum!

I used a lemon cake mix with diet sprite. Then I made a frosting using a sugar free lemon instant pudding mix, and a sugar free cool-wip. Topped with fresh strawberries. This is truley wonderful. - 6/5/07

I've made many varieties of this, one favorite is yellow cake with a diet orange pop, cool whip for frosting, and mandarin oranges on top... people at work devoured it in twenty minutes! - 6/13/09

I used yellow cake mix and diet 7-up... I too thought it had a stange flavor... I'll try the refrigerator trick! My biggest concern was that it crumbled terriby. - 4/5/09

Terrific moist cake! Made this one with Coke Zero and Devil's Food. Was a wee bit crumbly, so I'll probably add an egg white next time to keep it together. - 12/21/08

Great for a sweet tooth fix. Needs more time in the oven than the cake box says. Topped with powered sugar and it was yummy! - 10/7/08

We used cherry chip cake with a Sprite Zero. Then we added cool-whip light with sliced strawberries! UNBELIEVABLE!! - 9/10/08

My sister made this cake and it turned out really good. I thought maybe with only the cake mix and pop that it wouldn't taste good, but I was wrong. It was wonderful! My sister added fat free cool whip on top of the cake to make it even better. - 7/28/08
