Whisk together thoroughly in a large bowl:2 cups flour1/4 cup sugar4 tsp baking powder1/2 tsp salt1/4 tsp baking sodaWhisk together, then add all at once:1 large egg1 cup low-fat buttermilk3 1/2 tbsp warm melted unsalted butter1/2 cup cranberries (or other dried fruit such as raisins, currants, blueberries, cherries, apricots, pears)Mix until dry ingredients are moistened. Batter will be sticky. Use soupspoon to drop batter in mounds 2 1/2 inches in diameter at least 1 inch apart on baking sheet. Sprinkle top w/ sugar. Bake until golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.
