Peppernuts (Papanate Buns)

Ingredients
1 tsp sugar1 cup lukewarm water 2 pkg active dry yeast3 cups warm water1 cup melted shortening2 cups white sugar1 tsp pepper1/2 tsp salt1 tsp cinnamon11 cups flour
Directions
Dissolve 1 tsp sugar in lukewarm water and sprinkle yeast over the liquid and let stand for 10 minutes.

Combine with the remaining ingredients. Knead in last of flour, dough will be soft.

Place dough in a lightly greased bowl and let rise for about 4 hrs (or till doubled in size)

Shape into buns and place on greased cookie sheets. Let rise again. Bake at 325 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Makes about 5 dozen buns.
