I pressure cooker cooked my lentils with less water and tumeric -to cook faster. I also added garlic, cilantro, cumin to the dish and used olive oil instead of butter. Tasty and healthy too!!! I also substituted jalapenos with fresh green chillies - minced. - 6/23/08

This was really good. I substituted one of the teaspoons of turmeric for a teaspoon of garam masala, added a steamed head of cauliflower, and added 2 hot banana peppers in addition to the one Jalapeno. All of this served over brown rice. - 6/23/09

Simple and quick. My red lentils are tiny, a bit bigger than a jalapeno seed and they cook quickly so cooked only 40 min. I added much less liquid to make it thick, and added garlic and ginger because it seemed like a good idea, I enjoyed the dish. - 7/10/13

I used two good sized jalepenos and got plenty of spice with my dish. It was wonderful with some warm whole wheat pitas and I can't wait for leftovers...I don't often say that! - 6/26/08

is this the indian dal? If so, for flatbread, find a recipe for 'chapati", which is the traditional indian bread used when eating dal. - 6/23/08

Add more spice and a little less water or use one cup of white wine in place of a cup of water. Comes out great with olive oil and a little butter flavoring as well. - 6/23/08

Sounds good, but I am going to use chicken stock instead of water, and add some turkey smoked sausage to make it heartier for my teenage sons! Thanks for sharing this recipe! - 6/23/08
