Hungarian Whole Wheat Bread
- Number of Servings: 32
Ingredients
Directions
1 packet active dry yeast2 C warm water1/3 C dark molasses or honey (see note for nutritional info)2 T soft shortening2 t salt5 1/2 C whole wheat flour (Hungarian brand)
In mixing bowl place in order given all ingredients except flour. Add flour gradually to make a stiff dough. Knead on a well-floured surface until smooth and satiny, 8 to 10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl. Cover; let rise in warm place until doubled, 1 1/2 - 2 hours. (Rising bread in a microwave after microwaving a mug of water helps cut rising time, especially if the mug stays in the back corner.)
Divide in half; shap into balls. Cover with bowl; let rest 15 minutes. Shape into loaves. Place in well-greased 9x5 or 8x4-inch pans. Cover; let rise until light and doubled, about 1 hour.
Bake at 375 F for 30-35 minutes, or until deep golden brown.
Mmmmmmmmmm.
Makes 2 loaves, 16 1/2" slices each.
