Apple Dumplings

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups sugar1 1/2 cups water1/4 tsp cinnamon1/4 tsp nutmeg8 drops red food coloring3 tbsp. butter2 cups flour2 tsp baking soda1 tsp salt2/3 cup shortening1/2 cup milk6 medium apples, pared & Cored
Directions
For syrup, mix first 5 ingredients: bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add butter.
Cut shortening into dry ingredients till mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk all at once: stir just till flour is moistened. On lightly floured surface, roll to 18X12 inch rectangle
Cut in 6 inch squares. Peel and slice apples and divide evenly and put on each square of dough. Mix sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle apples with sugar mixture. Dot each with butter, (save 1 Tbsp for dotting each dumpling before baking) Moisten edges of dough and bring corners to center and pinch edges together.
Place 1 inch apart in foil lined 11X7X1 1/2 inch baking pan.
Pour syrup over dumplings, sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes or till apples are tnder. Serves 6
